The Tracey Rubinoff Diabetes Hope Fund
The proceeds that have been and will be raised from the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Tracey Rubinoff Diabetes Hope Fund Skates have
been and/or will be used for the following initiatives:
1. Scholarship Program
For the past 2 years the Tracey Rubinoff Fund has supported 7 scholarships to stellar young adults entering university life
making the transition from high school to university and from pediatric health care to adult health care. Each year a deserving
student or students from Ontario are selected from many applicants living with diabetes who apply to receive this scholarship.
The Diabetes Hope Foundation donated 36 scholarships in 2007, of which the Tracey Rubinoff Diabetes Hope Fund Scholarship
was one. Diabetes Hope Scholarships highlight the personal triumphs of young adults living in Ontario who face the many
responsibilities associated with diabetes management and have demonstrated unwavering commitment to self management, community
activities, future academic commitment. Last year, in addition to the Tracey Rubinoff Diabetes Hope Fund Scholarship, two
further scholarships will be awarded. The first is the Tracey Rubinoff Chesterfield Shop Diabetes Hope Fund Scholarship
and the second is the Tracey Rubinoff Camp Walden 24-Hour Sportathon Diabetes Hope Fund Scholarship. The Fund is thrilled
to be able to work with the Chesterfield Shop and Camp Walden and is so thankful for their generosity and hard work.
The Diabetes Hope Foundation expanded its scholarship program this year to Newfoundland. We are thrilled to announce that
the Tracey Rubinoff Diabetes Hope Fund awarded a further scholarship to Melissa Nichols, a student from Grand Falls Newfoundland.
2. Lockerbie Cabin
The Tracey Rubinoff Fund donated $20,000 to the much needed rebuild of the Doctors cabin at Camp Huronda which is a summer
camp for children with diabetes. Each year the Camp is very fortunate to have some of the leading endocrinologists, doctors
and residents work and train with the staff and children at the Camp. Without that medical staff, the Camp could not operate.
In addition to the renovations, the Tracey Rubinoff Fund has been responsible for sending 3 young children to camp who otherwise
could not afford to attend this wonderful camp experience.
3. McMaster Children's Foundation
The Diabetes Hope Foundation and the Tracey Rubinoff Fund have teamed up in partnership with the McMaster Children's Foundation,
with the Tracey Rubinoff Fund helping to contribute up to $20,000 over a five-year period for the children's diabetes program.
4. Medical Assistance Program
The Tracey Rubinoff fund has allocated $40,000 to medical assistance programs in conjunction with McMaster Hospital, Markham/Stouffville
Hospital and Toronto Sick Children's Hospital in addition to 2 pediatric clinics in Newfoundland. The Medical Assistance
Program is designed to assist families who are not covered by third party health insurance and who struggle to purchase
life-sustaining medications needed to control their children living with diabetes. For lower income families and new immigrants
these costs are staggering.
