All About DKA

Jake's T1D Adventure

Jake fills his days with hockey, school, hanging out with his friends… oh, and managing type 1 diabetes. But diabetes doesn’t always make sense, and during his trip to the diabetes clinic, Jake learns a new term that makes things even more confusing – DKA.

Luckily, Jake doesn’t have to figure it all out on his own. With the help of a Health Fairy named Afreen, Jake goes on an adventure inside his body to understand what DKA really is. Through science, laughter and a whole lot of magic, Jake learns the importance of checking for ketones and gains the knowledge and power he needs to take action and keep himself safe!

All About DKA is a collaborative project from the DHF community, written as the fourth book in the Nothing Can Stop Me series. Proceeds raised from the sale of All About DKA will be used to support DHF’s free programs and resources for Canadian youth living with type 1 diabetes.

Recommended for ages 6 – 12 | Available on Amazon in English and French!

Afreen is now pursuing a PhD in Public Health at the University of Waterloo to understand and support type 2 diabetes health communication in the Northwest Territories. Afreen is passionate about making health information easier to understand, more engaging, and more relevant to the communities it serves.

A note from the authors...

To our sweet, sweet T1D community,

For every reader living with T1D, and to every person who loves and cares for them, we hope you remember this: being in DKA, having a scary low, battling a stubborn high, and everything in between is a testament to how much we T1Ds carry on our shoulders.

We hope this book reminds you that:

You are capable.

You are powerful.

You are a warrior.

So wear your T1D with confidence. Ask every question. Voice every symptom. Tear down every misconception. Be proud of everything you’ve done and everything you are becoming. Take a breath, calculate your next move (or should we say bolus!), and keep on rocking.

With love,
