Free to Be – Spring 2024 Session 4

April 27 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Free to Be event

Free to Be – Spring 2024

Diabetes is weird. It may be taught like a math problem, but 2+2 rarely equals 4 when you’re living with type 1 diabetes. This workshop series is designed to explore the human side of being a type 1 diabetic, focusing on the frustrating, contradictory, and just plain silly experiences that come from living life with type 1 diabetes.

Free to Be is a newly developed arts program offered by Diabetes Hope Foundation (DHF). By combining elements of visual and dramatic arts, participants are invited to embrace the chaos of life with type 1 diabetes. Students in grades 10 to 12 will connect with fellow T1Ds (including their two artistic facilitators!) and get to the bottom of how it feels to live with type 1 diabetes. They’ll customize and decorate their own commedia dell’arte inspired masks, use those masks to develop characters and improvise scenes, and collectively devise a performance showcase for family, friends, and healthcare professionals.

We’re looking beyond the numbers and creating a space for participants to laugh at their troubles and find strength through play!
